Iron Man Yo-Yo (MIT 2.008)

About the Project

This project was made for MIT's 2.008 Design and Manufacturing II class. We were required to produce 50 custom yo-yos using injection molding and thermoforming. My group decided to make a yo-yo inspired by Iron Man's arc reactor, complete with a custom PCB that causes the yo-yo to light up when it spins. I was responsible for designing and manufacturing the mold for one of the parts on the yo-yo, as well as completing a production run of that part and measuring quality .

Mold Making

After finalizing the overall design of the yo-yo, I was required to make the mold for the "gray ring" part, one that was eventually overloaded into the outer red portion of the yo-yo. I made the molds in Solid works and used MasterCam to program the Cam. The molds were manufactured using both a CNC lathe and a CNC mill.

Production Run

Once the molds were made, I used them to injection mold 100 gray rings (two for each yo-yo). The diameter of each gray ring was measured and recorded as the production cycle went on. After 100 rings were made, a disturbance was introduced into the process by decreasing the cooling time and an additional 20 rings were injection molded. This data was used to create a run chart and control chart to verify that the manufacturing process was capable and in control. The charts can be seen below.

Results

After I finished my gray ring production run, the rest of my team completed their individual parts, and we successfully assembled 50 light up yo-yos.
